Cliché Toupée
Endlessly Continuous
RECOMMENDED!
SELN Recordings is delighted to present the debut album from South London’s very own Cliché Toupee, moniker of artist Cazz Walton-C.
As dark as it is delightful, this collection of tracks effortlessly journeys between a post-punk mindset and something more jovial and celebratory.
Imagine if Chris and Cosey took a valium during some of their “Exotika” sessions and you might have something close. This music was recorded
over a span of eight years in a variety of different situations, physical locations and mental states; including in the self described “Opiate Fulled
Hell Hole” which was living in Rugby Town in the late 2000s.
With the earliest track on this album being recorded way back in ‘07, and the most modern composition coming in hot from 2015, you’d be right
to view this as a compilation. However we feel the sonic consistency throughout the music is as tight as it is coherent, therefore it deserves to be
experienced as an album. Anyhow your best bet is probably to just listen to the thing.
Setting the scene is ‘Atemporal’ - brooding guitars summon the essence of a Doom Metal gig’s opening piece. Ethereal meets the physical
realm - DIG ON IN! Farsh opens up with lyrics from the Deutsche originators Kraftwerk. But don’t be fooled - this is no cheap imitation or even
expensive hommage - Farsh is a masterpiece in its own right. It has the flow and addiction of a light pop number, yet with something far more
melancholic and subtle lurking underneath.
Flash is a straight banger - nearly 8 minutes of solid guitar riff. Need we say more? It’s as good as it sounds (if not better). In Around Thru Knot
gives the listener pause for thought. Tantric sparkles flow in a ritualistic manner readying the audience for what is about to arrive next. Which is
of course simply more great music.
Los Alamos strikes a more beat driven number - drums take the lead here whilst vocal-esq samples rise and fall. Think J.R Oppenheimer taking
time out at the A-Bomb camp to dabble with some Roland gear and you get the picture. Three Wishes - this cover of TV personalities is
seriously top drawer stuff. A far more sombre and downward affair than the original, Walton-C’s voice has a ghostly charm which draws you in
and haunts you. Picture Dan Treacy strung out on a certain substance and you won’t be far off (albeit not a far fetched thought).
Black E closes the show in style, and how could it possibly be any other way? Dark piano keys ring out as brooding strings build underneath. A
fitting ode to this album as a whole!
