Theo Parrish
First Floor (Part 1)
Detroit don Theo Parrish has released many incredible records over the years, but few quite so lauded as his game-changing debut album, 1998's First Floor. Peacefrog has decided to reissue the two-part vinyl version of the acclaimed set (on eye-catching 'smoky vinyl' no less), beginning with this first missive. Beginning with the ten-minute chug of 'First Floor Metaphor', where Parrish peppers sparse 'beatdown' beats and a memorable synth bassline with deliciously deep chords and twinkling keyboard solos, the set pushes forward a distinctive trademark sound rich in dusty samples, hissing drum machine beats, hypnotic synthesiser motifs and subtle nods aplenty to the artist's beloved jazz, soul and disco. It remains one of the strongest collections of cuts to emerge from the Motor City deep house scene.
